Tintype photography is a 19th-century process that creates images on metal plates. Invented in the 1850s, it involves coating a thin sheet of iron with a light-sensitive emulsion, exposing it in a large-format camera, and developing it while still wet. The result is a single, direct-positive image with high contrast and fine detail. Each tintype is unique, and slight imperfections are common due to the handmade process.
Tintypes were widely used during the Civil War because they were fast, inexpensive, and durable. They remained popular into the early 20th century before falling out of mainstream use. Today, they’re made mostly by artists and photographers interested in historical techniques. Sitting for a tintype usually involves a short exposure time and a bit of patience, with the final image ready in minutes.
